This is the long version: every screen you'll see, in the order you'll see it, from an empty Playbooks page to a live playbook you can check on. If you've never built one before, start here and follow along.

It takes about ten minutes the first time.

What you'll need: access to Playbooks in your admin area. That's it. Nothing to install, nothing to connect.

What a playbook actually is

A playbook is a rule that runs itself. You tell it three things:

  1. When to run (someone posts a job, a member registers, every Monday morning)
  2. Who it applies to (everyone, or only the ones matching your conditions)
  3. What to do (send an email, update a record, add someone to a mailing list)

That's the whole idea. Everything below is just filling in those three answers.

Step 1: Open Playbooks

Click Playbooks in the left sidebar. It's a top-level item with its own icon, so you won't have to hunt through a menu.

You'll see two tabs:

If you've never made one, the templates tab opens first.

Shortcut worth taking. Browse the templates before you build anything from scratch. If one is close to what you want, click Set Up on it and you'll get the same form with the name, trigger, and email already written. Editing something is faster than starting from nothing.

Step 2: Start a new playbook

Click New Playbook at the top right.

The page turns into one long form. Don't be put off by that: most of it is hidden when you arrive and appears a section at a time as you answer the section above it. You'll never see a question you're not ready for.
